Season opening success

SALEM The Salem Lady Quakers got the new season started on a good note, coming out strong and cruising to a 71-45 victory over Crestview, Saturday night in Salem. The Lady Quakers jumped on top 20-6 after the first period and never let up against a young Lady Rebels team.
Salem put together a total team effort with four players scoring in double-figures. Andrea Seguin led the way scoring 16 points and also gathering seven rebounds. Future Ohio State Buckeye Amy Scullion fell one rebound short of a double-double scoring 15 points and getting nine rebounds.
Chelsea Fuson scored 13 points and Danielle Kruegel added 12.
Other Lady Quakers filled the score sheet in other areas besides points. Taylor Sauerwein got four assists. Danielle Perry had six rebounds and three assists.
Salem's pressure defense was too much for Crestview to handle as the Lady Quakers forced 22 Crestview turnovers, 16 of them coming on steals. Peyton Meals, along with Scullion and Seguin led with three steals apiece.
Salem also out-rebounded Crestview 33-22. 16 of Salem's rebounds came on the offensive end.
The Lady?Quakers also connected on six three point shots, Kruegel and Fuson had two apiece. Scullion and Katherine Stiff each had one.
Crestview was led on the night by Shanelle Davner who finished with 14 points and nine rebounds. Ashley Harrison added nine points and Kara Taggart scored eight.
Salem will play next on Wednesday as they travel to Beaver Local. Crestview is back in action Monday as they travel to Western Reserve.
Columbiana 52, Heartland Christian 20
COLUMBIANA The Columbiana Lady Clippers had a successful season opener as they defeated Heartland Christian 52-20. Columbiana got off to a fast start leading 13-4 after the first quarter and 30-8 at halftime.
Hayley Goist led the way for the Lady Clippers with 13 points. She also got six steals on the night. Katie Witmer shared game-high with 13 points and matched Goist with six steals and also delivered five assists.
Irene Coy finished with seven points, gathered 10 rebounds and blocked five shots.
Dawn Lariccia lead Heartland with eight points and six rebounds.
Columbiana will be back in action Thursday night as they travel to play neighboring rival, Leetonia.
