Knox students take on the challenge
KNOX TOWNSHIP-The third, fourth and fifth-grade students at Knox Elementary School participated in the inaugural NBA/WNBA FIT challenge during physical education classes.
The students competed in five fitness activities, with each activity timed for 30 seconds. The students did wall passes, jump rope, line sprints, defensive shuffle, and speed revolution, which is moving the basketball around the waist as quickly as possible.
The local first-place winners in each age group qualify, but do not automatically advance to the NBA/WNBA FIT Challenge regional competition Local winners' scores will be compared with the other local champions in the Cleveland Cavaliers market area in order to determine the top four finishers in each age group and gender group to advance to the regional competition. Winners will be notified by the FIT Challenge headquarters if they advance. First, second and third-place finishers in each group received ribbons.

4Age 9-10 girls: D'Kota Zurbrugg, first; Kylie Coffelt, second; Mikaela Whaley, third.

4Age 8 and under boys: Blaise Chaffin, first; Hunter Gordon, second; Anthony Lacivita, third.

Cowden is member of fraternity at Ashland
ASHLAND-Bret Cowden of 11412 State Route 9, Kensington, is a member of the Phi Kappa Psi fraternity at Ashland University. He is the son of Andrea Cowden and is majoring in music education.
Phi Kappa Psi encourages scholarship, provides leadership and business training, enhances loyalty and fosters high ideals. Fraternity activities include the Kit Carson Run for Philanthropy, Thanksgiving canned food drive, Halloween party for alumni and a Father's Day pig roast. Members must maintain a 2.3 grade point average.
Scholarship recipient attending YSU
SALEM-Sarah Crabtree a 2009 graduate of Salem High School, is attending Youngstown State University, majoring in musical/theater. Crabtree is the daughter of Betty Crabtree and granddaughter of Glen and Wanda Crabtree of Salem.
Crabtree is the recent recipient of the Red and White scholarship, The Doris Williams Art Memorial Scholarship Award, The Florence Simon Beecher Theatre award and the Charles E. Williams Scholarship given by the Salem Community Theatre. She has been in many of the productions at the Salem Community Theatre, where she is also a member of the youth chorus. The chorus has traveled to Washington D.C., Williamsburg, Va., and New York City. Future plans are to tour Europe in August of 2010. In 1994, Crabtree traveled to New Zealand and Australia with People to People Sports Ambassadors. Her dream is to someday perform on Broadway and hopes to continue her singing and acting career in New York City after graduating from Youngstown State University.
Local students on OVCT dean's list
EAST LIVERPOOL-The following students have been named to the dean's list at Ohio Valley College of Technology for the summer 2009-B semester concluded Oct. 23. To qualify for the dean's list, students are required to achieve a semester average of 3.75 or greater on a 4.00 scale while maintaining full-time enrollment status.

Area students are member of Delta Zeta
ASHLAND-The following area residents are members of the Delta Zeta sorority at Ashland University.
4 Kayla Faudree of 439 S. 15th St., Sebring, is the daughter of Stephen and Teresa Faudree. She is majoring in middle grades education.
4 Diedre Kent of 2392 Queensbury Road, Alliance, is the daughter of David and Kim Kent. She is majoring in early childhood education. Brittany Lee of 12535 Beula St., Alliance, is the daughter of Mary Lee and is majoring in journalism.
The purpose of Delta Zeta is to promote the values of sisterhood through scholarship, community service and social events. Delta Zeta's activities include Senior Week, Parents Banquet, an annual magazine drive for speech and hearing, car washing and social gatherings. Membership in Delta Zeta is open to female students who are maintaining at least a 2.3 GPA and are involved in at least two other organizations on campus.
Wilson elected Student Academic Member
EAST PALESTINE-Lynn M. Wilson of Philadelphia, Pa., formerly of East Palestine, has been elected as the Student Academic Member to the American College of Osteopathic Family Physicians National Board of Governors at The 46th ACOFP Annual Convention, held March 4-8 in Washington, D.C.
Wilson is the daughter of Jim and Carolyn Wilson of East Palestine. She graduated from East Palestine High School in 2002 and also graduated from Cedar Crest College (Allentown, Pa) in 2006. She plans to graduate from Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine in June 2010.
