TOPS Chapter 1380 recognizes winners

SALEM-TOPS Chapter 1380 met Nov. 16 at the Emmanuel Lutheran Church with Margaret Phillips winning KOPS. Honorable mention went to Shirley Bullis and Eleanor May took TOPS. The Rolling Cash Five was won by Phillips. The Christmas party committee will meet to finalize plans and make party favors at 1 p.m. today at the Baughman home in Columbiana An open forum was held for therapy and Bullis read for the circle of light.

Salem Square Wheels elects officers

SALEM-The Salem Square Wheels held a dance on Nov. 14 with over 45 in attendance. Calling squares was Ed Laudenslager from the Columbus area and on rounds was Kristy Lake of Hanoverton. Hosting this event was John Paul Tolson of Salem. The Square Wheels held its annual election of officers after the dance. The slate of officers for 2010 are President Amy Riehl of Columbiana, Vice President Don Bloors of Kensington, Secretary Kris Chismar of Canfield, and Treasurer Barb Amon of Hanoverton. The next regularly scheduled club dance is Nov. 28. Visitors are always welcome.

R-Weigh winners

recognized at meetings

SALEM- The R-Weigh weight reducing groups met Nov. 16 at Faith Chapel and recorded a loss of 32 pounds for the week. Good losers for the week were Nancy Hirshfield, Barb Smith, Diane Hart, Jean Swarts, JoAnne Bogdan and Faith Hodnick. Linda Lude and Patty Mills were the goalies of the week. Hodnick reached her three-fourth way to goal weight and Jesse Rea won the can-do monetary award. The Tammy Turkeys won the monetary stuffing from the Henny Pennys in the turkey contest at the 1 p.m. meeting.

The Gobblers and Turkey Strutters won the monetary stuffing from the Gabby Gobblers and Gobbier Gobblers in the turkey contest at the 5 p.m. meeting.

At a previous meeting, a loss of 41 pounds was recorded for the week. The good loser was Barbara Smith and the goalies were Pat Mills, Shirley Dias and Ruth Miller. Dianne Scott won the can-do award. Sue Kinirons presided at the 1 p.m. meeting and announced that the afternoon group has lost 22l net pounds since January and has lost 872 pounds since the members joined the group. They have nine members below their goal weight. The Tammy Turkeys won the stuffing from the Henny Pennys in the Turkey contest.

Karen Pauline presided at the 5 p.m. meeting and announced that the evening group has lost 329 net pounds since January and l,822 pounds since joining the group. They have 18 members below their goal weight. The Gobblers and Gabby Gobblers tied and won the stuffing from the Gabbier Gobblers and Turkey Strutters in the turkey contest.

The l p.m. group will have its Christmas party at 12:15 p.m. Dec. 14 at the Salem Community Center. The evening group's party begins at 6:15 p.m. Dec. 7 at the same place. Reservations are due by Dec. 23.

Leetonia Ruritans

approve slate of officers

LEETONIA-Leetonia Ruritans met for their regular meeting on Nov. 10 at the Leetonia Library. The following slate of officers for 2010 was approved: Al Citino, president; Lee Hollenshead, vice president'; Lynn Eskay, treasurer; Ron Bulford, secretary; Steve Buffone, third-year director; Ray Heddleson, second-year director; and John Hall, first-year director. The club voted to distribute the proceeds from the Pizza Challenge to American Legion Post 131 food baskets, Leetonia Christian Concern, St. Vincent DePaul, Leetonia Police Department/Salem Township Care and Share program.

Members were asked to donate an unwrapped toy for the Ruriteens Toys for Tots campaign. The next meeting is Dec. 8 at the Salem Golf Club featuring the Christmas party for members and a guest. The location will be announced. The "Ruritan of the Year" award will be presented.

Donations totaling $1,000 were given to area organizations to aid with holiday food baskets.

The Ruri-Teens are and will continue to be very busy this fall and winter. A project to raise funds for Breast Cancer Awareness has just been completed. The club is currently collecting for the Marine Reserve "Toys for Tots" program. They are also sponsoring a "guitar hero" tournament during high school lunch period. Upcoming events are the tennis ball toss at varsity basketball games. This school year the club celebrates its 10th anniversary.

Fairfield Farmhands

announces new officers

NEW WATERFORD-The Fairfield Farmhands 4-H group met on Nov. 10 at the East Fairfield United Methodist Church. Members signed up for their projects for the year and paid county membership dues and book fees. All members from last year received their premium money. Members are planning to participate in the New Waterford Christmas parade.

Officers for the year are President Austin Chamberlain, Vice President Tyler Morris, Treasurer Kaleb Baker, Secretary Heather Baker, News Reporter Adam Harrold, Recreation, Chantz Allison; Devotions, Paige McElroy; Health and Safety, Cody and Troy Wolfgang; and Pledge Leader, Alexa Jones. Refreshments were provided by Kaleb Baker. The Christmas party begins at 7:30 p.m. Dec. 8. Cody and Troy Wolfgang will provide refreshments and demonstrations.

Butler Grange discusses Ash Borer article

SALEM-Camille Wood presided when Butler Grange met recently at the Bailey residence. Myrtle Bailey presented a synopsis of an article, regarding the horticulturist for the federal Agriculture Research Service in Iowa, is heading an effort to collect tens of millions of ash seeds from across the United States that can be frozen and ready to plant, when researchers figure out how to kill or control the emerald ash borer. The seed collection project began in New England in 2007. Butler Grangers, along with volunteers, Mary Ellen Rist, Janice Ramus, Norma Sommers, Alfreda Humphrey, Janet Hays, Margaret and Calvin Zimmerman, Norm Seely, Dona and Lee Hardgrove, made 1,175 apple dumplings in October. Columbiana County Grangers met on Nov. 8 at Mount Nebo Grange for presentation of awards and recognition for the past year. An ice cream social followed.

Pomona Grange will meet at 7 p.m. Dec. 21 at Bayard Grange. Marvin and Mary Jo Dye will present their delegate report from the Ohio State Grange Convention. Ruth Ann Altenhof presented the program, Pursuit of Happiness Week Nov. 8-14. Regarding focusing on your priorities,Wood advised, "Get into the habit of making time each day for something you truly enjoy. It could be something small, as long as it makes you happy." Bailey and Wood discussed Top Ten Motivators, to tackle your own organizing projects, including simple ways to brighten someone's days, and make yourself feel good, call an old friend just to say hi, invite someone to lunch etc. Janet and Jim Zimmerman added "Inspirational Quotes for Happiness." Wood added, "What a wonderful life I've had! I only wish I'd realized it sooner."

October card winners were Russell Reight and Gilda Bell, first place; John Waterbeck and Myrtle Bailey, second. Bob Oliver won the door prize.

Winona Ruritans

honor birthdays

WINONA- "Happy Birthday" was sung to five members, Rob Donaldson, Harry Bowker, Reuben Powell, Wayne Herron and Leonard Lance, when Winona Ruritans met Nov. 10 at the Winona Methodist Church. Forty-nine members attended, along with a guest from California. All club members who are veterans were thanked for their service to our country. Members will be distributing poinsettias and/or fruit baskets to area residents during the Christmas holidays. The next board of directors meeting will be held on Dec. 1 at the home of Homer and Marilyn Althouse. The regular meeting on Dec. 8 will be held at the Lisbon Methodist Church. Hors d'ouevres will be served at 6:30 p.m. with dinner to follow at 7 p.m.

Saxon Retirees hold November meeting

SALEM-Forty-four members of Saxon Retirees and a guest enjoyed a meeting and coverdish buffet on Nov. 4. June Bauman was the guest of Pat and Bill Martin. Mike and Regina Bruckner were welcomed back along with others. President Lois Whitacre opened the meeting with Bill Hiltbrand presenting an appropriate Thanksgiving invocation. Hiltbrand took over for absent Secretary Sue Fritzman and read the minutes and acknowledged those added to the sick list. Katherine Lederle, treasurer, read her report and noted changes in future banking procedures. Nancy Stumperth announced members celebrating birthdays and anniversaries in December. Members are also reminded to wear their name badges to meetings or Siegfreid Henriss will be collecting a fee of a quarter from members without a badge. Entertaining stories were provided by Flo Juhn, George Spack, Hiltbrand and Frank Diehl.

It was announced that the officers are on the committee for the Dec. 2 dinner catered by Lorrie Weingart. Cost is $6 for members and $10 for guests. Dinners must be paid in advance to Katherine Lederle. The menu offers stuffed pork chops, mashed potatoes, stuffing, gravy, succotash, dessert and beverage. Reservations are to be called in to Lederle at 330-533-5154 before Nov. 29. Bingo was enjoyed by the group.
