Blood drive to be held
SALEM-Blood donations are in shorter supply during the holiday season as people are busy with holiday preparations. The additional challenges of a unique flu season may also prevent regular donors from giving. Salem Community Hospital, Salem Community Center and the office of Salem Orthodontist Dr. Frank Bailey are sponsoring a drive which offers a special challenge to the medical community. Area health care workers are asked to roll up their sleeves and donate blood to help offset the seasonal shortage. The drive will be held from 1 to 7 p.m. Dec. 11 at the Salem Community Center, 1098 N. Ellsworth Ave. A traveling trophy will be awarded to the local medical or dental office with the greatest participation at this drive.
Even if you don't work in the medical field, your donation is greatly needed and will be much appreciated by the thousands of patients who rely on this resource everyday. All individuals who meet blood donation guidelines are urged to participate and help the Red Cross to overcome other seasonal challenges, including inclement weather and holiday travel. As a special incentive, all donors will also be entered into a prize drawing and will receive a free day pass to the Salem Community Center. First time donors are welcome, and regular donors who have not given since Oct. 16 are eligible.
This donation site will also accommodate "double red" donors. Using a special process, individuals meeting certain height, weight and health criteria can give two units of red cells at one time. Double red donation is a safe and efficient way to help thousands of patients get the life-saving blood components they need, such as platelets, red blood cells or plasma, rather than whole blood. Using automation, the double red donation process selectively separates and stores the red cells, while the remaining product is returned to the donor. Since two units of red cells are collected, double red donors must wait 112 days between donations, instead of 56 days for regular donors. For questions regarding the guidelines that may affect your eligibility to donate call 866-236-3276.
Appointments to donate blood can be made by calling 330-332-7227.
Food bank gets grant
YOUNGSTOWN-With the recent economic downturn still affecting local families, hunger has been a challenge many have had to face this year. Thanks to a $7,500 grant from the Charter One Foundation, 6,048 meals will be provided to our friends and neighbors this holiday season. Charter One and the Second Harvest Food Bank have teamed up to provide 2,268 chickens through Charter One's Carving Out Hunger initiative, an annual campaign to raise awareness of hunger issues and provide holiday meals to men, women and children in need in the tri-county area. The chickens which total 9,000 pounds-will be distributed through the food bank's 152 member agencies.
In addition to granting $7,500 to purchase chickens for the holiday season, local Charter One employees volunteered their time at the food bank sorting and re-boxing food for distribution.
The Charter One Foundation has donated more than $100,000 this year and more than half a million dollars in the past five years for holiday food programs across Ohio including the Cleveland Foodbank, Akron-Canton Regional Foodbank, Mid-Ohio Foodbank, Cincinnati's Freestore Foodbank, Toledo Northwestern Ohio Food Bank and the Second Harvest Food Bank of the Mahoning Valley.
