NEW MANCHESTER — The Oak Glen volleyball team steam-rolled Tyler Consolidated to win the sectional championship game Thursday evening.
The girls won in three sets, 25-9, 25-14, 25-11 to defeat Tyler Consolidated in Class AA action. The Bears beat the Knights twice last year in the four-team, double-elimination sectional tournament.
“We played well,” head coach Ethel Riser said. “It was a whole team effort.”
Mackenzie Bailey helped establish the offensive attack by contributing 82 sets and 31 assists to the Bears. She also added 12 points, three aces and two blocks to the mix.
Racking up points on the scoreboard were Emily McElhaney with 12, Lacee Porter with eight, Payden Eckleberry added seven and Rainelle Dunlevy and Caitlyn Asbury contributed nine points.
Dunlevy led Oak Glen with 18 spikes while Asbury knocked down 17 of her own. Emily Frederick put down 14 and Porter added 13 spikes to round out the list of double-digit spikers. Frederick connected one nine kills while McElhaney helped with nine kills of her own.
“We hit, set and passed well,” a satisfied Riser added.
The Bears will play Saturday at 10 a.m. at Tyler in regional play.
Oak Glen won the state championship last year — with several key players making up this year’s squad — after about two-decades from their last crown.
