Voters head for polls today
By TOM GIAMBRONILISBON - Election Day 2009 has arrived, with voters across Columbiana County going to the polls today to determine the fate of numerous local candidate races and ballot issues.
More than 140 candidates are running for elected office in every city, village, township and school district in the county. Voters will also have their say on 20 money issues, five liquor options, a township zoning plan and a village electric discount program also on the ballot.
Of the 20 money issues, three are countywide: renewal of the 1 percent county sales tax and a 0.75-mill Children Services levy. Renewal of a 0.2-mill cancer clinic levy is also being sought by the county health department but as a replacement levy, except in East Liverpool, Salem and East Palestine, which have their own health departments.
In Salem, voters are being asked to approve a 0.5 percent increase in the city income tax, while the Leetonia school board is hoping for passage of a new 8.8-mill operating levy officials say is crucial for the school district's continued survival.
All 103 precincts will open at 6:30 a.m. and close 13 hours later at 7:30 p.m.
County elections board officials also want to remind voters in the following precincts of changes in their polling locations. Voters should have already received a postcard in the mail advising them of the changes.
In East Palestine, precincts 2A and 4A have been combined, with those who formerly voted at the old city hall (Captain Taggart School) now voting at the Church of Christ at 20 W. Martin St.
Voters in the Glasgow precinct in Madison Township, who formerly voted at the Yellow Creek Grange, will move directly across state Route 45 to cast their ballots at the Yellow Creek Presbyterian Church.
In Butler Township, those living in the South precinct who voted at the Winona Methodist Youth ministry building on Winona Road saw their polling place moved to the Winona Friends Church on Whinnery Road.
