SALEM -The Salem Quakers, a program that went from winless to 8-2 in one season, is headed to the playoffs for the first time in school history taking the fifth seed in Division III, Region 11. Their reward? A near three-hour drive to take on the Blue Aces of Granville (9-1) Friday night.

Salem head coach Mike Kopachy already has taken the long trip out of the equation. The team will head to Granville Thursday night after watching the Salem Lady Quakers volleyball squad compete in regional action in Stow.

"We'll have some meetings and watch some film on Friday before the game," he said. "That way we don't have to make the drive Friday."

Salem is the only area Division III team school to qualify for the postseason and will find an opponent with a similar style in Granville.

"They are a spread team, kind of like us," Kopachy said. "They thrive on a lot of pressure on the offense. They're well coached."

One of Granville's coaches is offensive coordinator Scott McMullen, who served as a backup quarterback at Ohio State behind Craig Krenzel and Justin Zwick. McMullen is a Granville graduate.

Salem is preparing for its opponent like any other.

"Every one of these teams is there for a reason," Kopachy said. "I don't know that it matters who we are playing. We know it's going to be a good challenge."

Also moving on to week 11 of high school football are East Palestine (7-3) and Crestview (9-1) -both in Division V, Region 17. They will meet one another for the second time on the season Friday at Crestview. Earlier in the year the Rebels beat the Bulldogs 35-14 at home. East Palestine is looking to get back in the right direction after back-to-back losses to close out its regular season campaign.

Columbiana (8-2) will make its fifth straight playoff appearance Saturday night when it hosts Shadyside (5-5) in Division VI Region 23.

Western Reserve (9-1) has worked its way back into the postseason for the third time in four years and will travel to perennial playoff squad Norwalk St. Paul (10-0) in Division VI Region 21.
