Salem Aglow Lighthouse schedules meeting
ALLIANCE-Salem Aglow Lighthouse will meet at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Perkins Restaurant and Bakery. Winifred Stratton is the guest speaker. A $3 donation will be taken. An optional lunch follows.
Seven and One Club
hold October meeting
SALEM- Games of 500 were played when the Seven and One Club met Oct. 21 at the home of Mrs. Herb Bott. Tracy Sekely was welcomed as a guest. The hostess served pumpkin pie with whipped topping for dessert. Prizes were won by Mrs. Ken Kaufman, first; Mrs. John Hively, second; Mrs. Fred Weingart, low; and Mrs. Jack Bruderly, travel. It was announced that the group will have a $20 gift exchange in December and the secret Christmas name exchange was held. The next meeting begins at 7 p.m. Nov. 18 at the home of Mrs. Larry Dearth on Route 534.
TOPS Chapter 1380
recognizes members
SALEM-TOPS Chapter 1380 met on Oct. 19 at the Emmanuel Lutheran Church. Weekly awards were presented to Eleanor May, TOPS; Margaret Phillips, KOPS; and Shirley Hartman, honorable mention. Cindy Eastman won the Rolling Cash 5 and Jeannie Luxeuil read for the circle of light. Following the meeting members attended a craft auction.
Salem Square Wheels
hosts costume party
SALEM-The Salem Square Wheels western-style square dance club held a costume party and dance on Oct. 24. Hosting this dance was Jim and Martha Means of Salem. Gene Hammond of Hubbard was the caller and cued rounds were provided by Bruce Haislip of Wintersville. The next dance is scheduled from 8 to 10:30 p.m. Nov. 14 at the Sebring Community Center. Guests are welcome.
38th Christkindl Markt
to be held in Canton
CANTON-The 38th annual Christkindl Markt, a juried fine arts and fine crafts show will be held from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Nov. 13, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Nov. 14, and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Nov. 15 at the Canton Cultural Center for the Arts, 1001 Market Ave North.
Over 100 outstanding exhibitors will be featured including handcrafted jewelry, photography, functional and decorative pottery, artist designed fashions, original watercolors, oils and acrylics, and much more. This event is presented by the Canton Fine Arts Associates, an affiliate and volunteer fund-raising organization of the Canton Museum of Art.
Proceeds from Christkindl Markt benefit the Canton Museum of Art and are used for museum programs and administrative needs.
The door prizes offers a $1,000 shopping spree donated by Andreas Furniture of Sugarcreek.
Parking is free. Advance entrance tickets are $5. Tickets at the door are $6 for adults, $5 for senior citizens (60+) and children (6-12).

West Point Lions collecting coats for give-away
WEST POINT- West Point Lions Club President Betty Colian welcomed members to the Oct. 19 meeting held at St. Agatha Hall. Veronica Wolski offered the invocation and benediction.
A donation was approved to be given to the Methodist Church for its food bank. Members will be collecting coats for a coat give away that will be held at the church. The club is hosting the second Zone meeting at 6:30 p.m. Nov. 16 at the church. Cost is $12 for the steak dinner.
The Nov. 2 meeting begins at 7 p.m. at St. Agatha. A board meeting follows at 6:30 p.m. Nov. 11 at the Taste of Country Restaurant. A program was given by Jane May who spoke on her recent mission trip to Guatemala.
VFW Auxiliary welcomes
District Six president
WASHINGTONVILLE-The Ladies Auxiliary to York Drexler Post 5532 Veterans of Foreign Wars met on Oct. 12 with 10 officers and members present. Also present was District Six President Francis Simon from Canal Fulton who conducted the yearly inspection.
Chaplain Alice Drummond recited the opening prayer. The minutes of the last meeting were read by Secretary Sharon Janovec. A thank-you card was received from Sherry Ford thanking the auxiliary for the money donated to the Heart Walk in which she participated.
A petition for membership was received for Tracy Hollenchick of Kensington. Treasurer Marie Miller read the treasurer's report which is on file subject to audit. The trustees read the audit report. Lucy Works made a motion to accept the audit report. Maryann Milsom seconded it motion carried.
Jan Keene reported that the Super Kids Classic Halloween Party will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. today with approximately 20 to 30 kids and possibly some ghost drivers in attendance.
President Ruth Pratt reminded everyone that dues need to be paid by Nov. 6 to be eligible for the drawing to be held at the Nov. 9 meeting for a lifetime membership. A sign-up sheet is posted for the auxiliary Christmas part on Dec. 14 at Mason's Steak House.
A get well card was signed and sent to Lucy Works' mother. Dorothy Nixon from NAMI asked if the ladies will once again serve their Christmas dinner at noon Dec. 10. A discussion was held and it was agreed upon. Alice Drummond won the attendance drawing. The next meeting begins at 7 p.m. Nov. 9 at the post home.
Damascus Garden Club
planning trip to Cleveland
DAMASCUS-The Damascus Garden Club met at the home of Joyce Steer on Oct. 8 Marge Miller and Lee Kuentz served as co-hostesses. Fourteen member answered roll call and the monthly reports were read and approved. Correspondence included a letter from the Goshen-Butler Community Fund requesting a donation. The membership voted to again, as in 2008, to donate $100. Perennial plants will be pruned and mulched and put to bed for the winter. The raised garden beds at the Pleasant View Nursing Home will also be cleaned of dead plants. The committee thanked the members for watering and weeding the gardens the past summer months.
The club is planning a bus trip to the Cleveland Botanical Gardens for the spring of 2010. Members will be selling tickets for this event. More information will given by Marilyn Brumbaugh at future meetings. Marsha Spack was accepted as a new member and Dutch Celin, a member of the club since 1962, will become an honorary member. Programs were presented by Marilyn Wingett on bringing outside plants in and Irene Morckel on roadside Beauty. Wingett stressed be importance of acclimating the plants to the new surroundings and providing the best light possible and checking for insects and treating the soil.
Morckel displayed two arrangements she had designed using roadside materials that included golden rod, joe-pye weed, black eyed Susan, Queen Ann's lace, teasel, and grasses, twigs and branches. Zucchini soup, corn bread and pumpkin tarts were served. Each member received a miniature pumpkin filled with candy as a favor. The Nov. 12 meeting will be held at the Damascus Friends Church.
Damascus historical society
to meet Nov. 17
DAMASCUS-The Damascus Area Historical society held its monthly meeting on Oct. 20 with 16 members present. President Mark Baker opened the meeting with the quote of the month "A man should keep his friendship in constant repair."
A thank-you note from the Damascus Elementary PIE was acknowledged. Ruth Herbert displayed several pictures with a foam backing. She suggested that the society could use this method on pictures to be placed on the walls in the Pearce House meeting room.
This process would negate the use of frames. She agreed to experiment sticking foam board backed pictures on the walls to see if it would damage the walls. Further discussion is needed. The executive board will be meeting soon to discuss several issues.
Herbert suggested that the society consider renting the upstairs apartment in the Pearce House as a method of bringing in some needed revenue. This will be discussed at the executive meeting. Clarence Sekerak and Donna Lautzenheiser will be invited to the meeting to discuss the Damascus Bicentennial booklet's completion, printing, number of copies to order, and the cost. The society also needs to decide who should have keys to the various museum buildings Roger Martig explained Issue 2 to the society, and its importance to the agricultural industry in Ohio. The next meeting begins at 7 p.m. Nov. 17 at the Pearce House meeting room. A program was presented by Dick Stoffer, "Readings from Aaron Frame's Diary." Refreshments were served by Alice Martig and Shirley Steer.
