'Crop with a Friend'

ALEM-The First Friends "Crop with a Friend" will meet from 6:30 to 10 p.m. Oct. 26 at the church. Those attending will experiment, create and bake polymer clay embellishments. Molds in a variety of themes will be available. Finished pieces can be used on cards or a scrapbook page. There is no cost or advance sign up. Taste in Salem tickets

SALEM-Tickets are now available for the annual Taste in Salem which begins at 6 p.m. Oct. 28 at the Salem Golf Club. Delicious cuisine from local restaurants will be featured along with baskets from local businesses to be raffled off to attendees. The Champagne Diamond Drop, with the pendant donated from Troll's Jewelry in Salem, will again be a featured part of the evening's festivities. Tickets are $30 in advance and $35 at the door. A limited amount of tickets are available and may be purchased at the Salem Area Chamber of Commerce during office hours, Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.; office closed noon to 1 p.m.

United Fall Pops Concert

HANOVERTON-The United Local Vocal Music Department will present its Fall Pops Concert at 7 p.m. Oct. 29 in the auditorium. Groups featured in this all Disney show will be seventh and eighth grade choirs, eighth grade show choir, high school mixed chorus, concert choir, and high school show choir "Flight." There will be a special patriotic finale that will accompanied by the handbell choir from First Presbyterian Church in Alliance under the direction of Alan Howenstine. Admission is free. The annual basket raffle will also be held.

Green Twp. Halloween

GREEN TOWNSHIP-The Green Township Halloween judging and parade begins at 6 p.m. Oct. 29 at South Range Middle School on Route 165 in Greenford. There also will be a decorated pumpkin contest.

Steak supper planned

BERLIN CENTER-The Berlin-Ellsworth Ruritan Club will serve a steak supper from 4 to 7 p.m. Nov. 7 at Western Reserve High School on Route 224. Carryouts are available

Halloween Dance

SALEM-A Halloween dance and costume contest will be held from 9 p.m. to 12:30 a.m. Oct. 31 at the Salem Slovak Club. Music will be provided by Kross Kreek. The public is welcome. There is no cover charge.

Humane Society event

SALEM-Entertainment by Salem Musician Jason Farcas and chances to win two roundtrip airline tickets by Air Tran Airways sets the backdrop for the Humane Society of Columbiana County's fund raiser beginning at 6 p.m. Saturday at The Barn. The ticket price of $15 includes a buffet dinner at 7 p.m. of hot chicken and pulled pork sandwiches, cole slaw, potato, corn, dessert and beverage. Appetizers and a cash bar also begin at 6 p.m.

Auction viewing and bidding start at 6 p.m. with a selection of vendors providing cash and carry items including Tastefully Simple and Sterling Strands. Guests purchasing tickets prior to Friday will receive 10 free Chinese auction tickets. Tickets may be obtained by calling 330-420-5397 or 330-332-2600 or purchased at John's Outdoor Power on Depot Road, or Morris Financial Group in Salem, Wine Connection in Columbiana and Dessie Bates Tastefully Simple in Lisbon. Checks may be sent to HSCC, P.O. Box 101, Salem, Ohio 44460. Tickets are also available at the door.

The Barn is located at 15210 Pine Lake Road, three miles north of Salem off of Route 14 at the corner of Seacrest and Pine Lake Roads. Signs will be posted. All proceeds benefit the abused and neglected animals cared for by the Humane Society of Columbiana County. Attire is casual.

Green Twp. Zoning Board

GREEN TOWNSHIP-The Green Township Zoning Board will hold a working group meeting at 7 p.m. today at the Green Township Community Center.

Rummage sale planned

HANOVERTON-The Hanoverton Salvation Army will hold a rummage sale from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday and Saturday at the Ruritan Building on Second Street.

Junior Farmer dance

LISBON-The Lisbon Jr. Farmer Halloween dance will be held Saturday at the Columbiana County Career and Technical Center. The dance is open to all local youth ages 5 to 12 from 6 to 7:30 p.m.; and ages 13 to 18 from 8 to 10 p.m. Cost is $2 per person. Refreshments will be available.

Food giveaway

WINONA-Food for Friends by Friends, a food pantry ministry, will hold a food giveaway from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday at the Winona Friends Church, 4615 Whinnery Road. Families and individuals living in the United Local School District are eligible. For information call 330-222-1551.

Book sale Saturday

EAST PALESTINE-The Friends of the East Palestine Memorial Public Library will hold a book sale from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at the library, 309 N. Market St. All of the funds from the book sale will benefit the library. Available for sale are hardback and paperback books (children's, fiction and non-fiction), records, videos, puzzles, games, magazines, cassettes, books on tape, and VMS and DVD movies. Patrons will be able to fill an entire bag of books for $3.

Blessing of pets

COLUMBIANA-A service of the blessing of pets begins at 1 p.m. Saturday at Firestone Park (near the ball field). The blessing service will be led by the Rev. Lee Martin of Christ the King Anglican Church. Certificates will be given on which the name of the pet can be written.

Banquet in Salem

SALEM-The Columbiana County Democrats will sponsor the Banquet in Salem from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday at the Memorial Building. The Democrats will prepare and serve stuffed pork chops, mashed potatoes and gravy, green beans, applesauce, fruit, vegetables and dessert. Interested sponsors for both the Monday and fourth Thursday meals are needed and may call 330-337-3125 for information.

Salem 1946 breakfast

SALEM-The Salem High School Class of 1946 will meet for breakfast at 8:30 a.m. Oct. 27 at Adele's Place.

United Quilt Guild

HANOVERTON-The United Quilt Guild will meet at 7 p.m. Nov. 3 in the high school home economics room. Those attending are asked to bring equipment to make baby quilts.

Leetonia fall bush pick-up program

LEETONIA- The village's 2009 fall brush pick-up program started Monday and will run through Oct. 30.

Only one round will be made and spring 2010 will be the next scheduled pick up. Pick up will began Monday on the south side of the village and will move to the north side on Oct. 26.

Any brush put out after pick up is complete will be the property owner's responsibility to remove. Residents are asked to stack all cut brush in the curb lawn area and not on sidewalks or streets or in ditches. All brush must be stacked in the same direction with no pieces exceeding four feet in length.

The village will not remove entire trees that are cut down from private property, trimmings only. Do not mix leaves and other debris in brush piles or the village will not pick them up.

Awesome Aussie lunch

YOUNGSTOWN-Hospice of the Valley Humility of Mary Hearth Partners is inviting all cobbers (friends) to its "Awesome Aussie Luncheon," from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Nov. 12 at Outback Steakhouse, 7000 S. Tiffany Blvd. Youngstown. The event include raffles, a cash bar, and lunch served by favorite print, radio and TV personalities. All proceeds benefit Hospice of the Valley. The menu offers center cut sirloin with garlic mashed potatoes, grilled chicken with seasoned rice, grilled salmon with steamed vegetables and chicken Caesar salad. Cost is $20 per person.
