Goshen trustees set rates for use of new covered salt storage unit

GOSHEN TOWNSHIP- Township trustees agreed to terms with Berlin Township for salt storage at their regular meeting Monday night.

Berlin Township will pay $100 per month for storage of 100 tons each of salt and grit at Goshen's new salt storage facility built for approximately $29,000 at the township garage in August.

The trustees also proposed a $25 per month fee for Beloit for storage of 15 tons each of salt and grit, which will have to be approved by Beloit council.

"We want to be fair to both townships and Beloit, and I think we are being fair," said Trustee Rob Spencer.

"This is something I think you'll see more of," said Berlin Trustee Jodie Kale. "It's become very apparent that the county is not out there as a safety net, so we (county townships) are going to have to start working together more."

In other news, Fiscal Officer Tom Knoedler announced that despite plans to shift the management of the Mahoning County OVI Task Force and Safe Communities grants from the township to the Mill Creek MetroParks Police Department with former township police chief and grants coordinator Jim Willock, the MetroParks department refused to accept the responsibility. In turn, the trustees approved the new contract for the grants, including the amount for each participating agency in the county, for one more year.

Additionally, Police Chief Spike McDaniel commended Officer Kevin Stratton and Cpl. Joe Olinger for their part in apprehending a man who had broken into several vehicles at the Colonial Villa trailer park on Sept. 22.

The Goshen Center Ruritans will host their 2nd annual Veterans Day Celebration at 7 p.m. Nov. 11 at the administration building.

A spaghetti dinner benefiting animal sanctuary Alchemy Acres will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Nov. 7 at the administration building. Cost is $7 for adults and free for children 6 and under.

The next meeting is scheduled for 7 p.m. Nov. 9 at the administration building.
