Retired Workers

SALEM - Salem Area Retired Workers will meet at 12:30 p.m. Thursday at the union hall at 547 Prospect St. Lunch will be provided after which bingo will be played. Get you tickets for the catered Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners. New members welcome.

Apple butter

SALEM-The Salem Historical Society will be making apple butter today during Heritage Day activities. John Gilbert will start the kettle in the morning on the society's grounds at the corner of South Broadway Avenue and East Pershing Street. After four hours of cooking the apples, the apple butter will be available for sale. The Underground Railroad tours are also being conducted by the society. For information call 330-337-8514.

Cornhole tourney

LEETONIA-The Leetonia Junior Class After Prom Committee will sponsor a cornhole tournament at 2 p.m. today at the Franklin Square ball fields. Registration begins at 1:30 p.m. There are two divisions, ages 12-17, fee is $10; and ages 18 and up, $15. The winner in each division will win half of what is taken in for each division. There will be a 50/50 raffle and concessions.

Free hot lunch

SALEM-Free, hot lunches will be served from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the Salvation Army, 1249 N. Ellsworth Ave. The meals will be served on Oct. 6, 8, 13, 15, 20 and 22; and also Monday through Friday, Oct. 26-30. The meal includes a main dish, side dish and beverage. United BOE meets

HANOVERTON-United Local School District Board of Education will meet at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 8 in the high school library to consider routine district business.

Goshen Extension

SALEM-Goshen Home Extension will meet at 10:30 a.m. Oct. 9 at Salem Hills Golf and Country Club.

Mushroom program

NORTH LIMA-Area mushroom expert Walter Sturgeon will present a free program on mushrooms at 3 p.m. Oct. 10 at the Beaver Township Nature Preserve on Route 165 in East Lewistown. The educational program is part of the 2009 Nature Preserve Series sponsored by the Beaver Township Park Board. An additional program with Bob Coggeshall of Mill Creek Park's Ford Nature Center begins at 6 p.m. Oct. 24. For information call 330-549-9552.

Rabies clinic

HANOVERTON-The Hanoverton Fire Department will host its annual rabies clinic from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Oct. 10 at Station 28 on Second Street. Cost is $6 for the rabies vaccine.

Breakfast offered

SALEM-A public breakfast buffet will be served from 7:30 to 10 a.m. Oct. 24 at the Salem Masonic Temple, 788 E. State St.

Cost is $6 for adults, $3 for children under age 10 and free for children under 2. The menu offers pancakes, waffles, sausage, bacon, scrambled eggs, homemade sausage gravy, biscuits, homefries, toast, fruit cocktail, orange juice, coffee and tea.

Carryouts are available. The building is equipped with a handicapped accessible elevator. Proceeds will be directed to the Salem Masonic Temple Building Fund.

Christmas assistance

SALEM- The Salvation Army at 1249 N. Ellsworth Ave. has announced the sign-up dates for Christmas assistance for the Salem area. Sign-ups will be accepted from 9 a.m. to noon and 1 to 3 p.m. Oct. 26 and Nov. 2; 9 a.m. to noon, 1 to 3 p.m. and 5 to 9 p.m. Oct. 28 and Nov. 4; and 9 a.m. to noon Oct. 30 and Nov. 6.

The make-up date is 5 to 9 p.m. Nov. 9. For information call 330-332-5624.

Beaver Local shots

LISBON-Beaver Local High School will be a closed Point of Dispensing (POD) site for the H1N1 flu shot. It was recently reported incorrectly that the high school would be an open site. The school will be working with the Columbiana Health Department. At this time the target audiences are those between 6 months and 24 years of age and women who are pregnant.

Further information will be provided when the exact dates for the dispensing of the H1N1 flu shot will. be. In the meantime, prevention is the best defense against any flu. If you would like information about the H1N1 flu, it is available on the Beaver Local website, www.beaver.kl2.oh.us. Parents who do not have access to the Web site may pick up information at any of the schools.

Down Syndrome

BOARDMAN-The Down Syndrome Association of the Valley announced Friday that it has received a $10,000 grant from the Hine Memorial Fund of the Youngstown Foundation for the opening and operations of the DSAV Center for Success in Boardman.

Serving as the DSAV office, this centralized location at 945 Boardman-Canfield Road, Suite 12 in Boardman will provide space for activities, resources, support and educational programs for individuals with Down syndrome and their families in eastern Ohio and western Pennsylvania. The facility will enable the DSAV to provide up-to-date information, public awareness and outreach for families, community members, educators and healthcare professionals.

The Center for Success will be the location for member meetings and family support groups along with programs and activities for individuals with Down syndrome from birth through adulthood. With easy access, the facility will also serve as a place for parents to network with each other and with healthcare and educational professionals.
