Wellness Tour

LEETONIA-The Leetonia High School Class of 1951 will meet for breakfast at 9 a.m. Oct. 6 at the Salem Hills Golf and Country Club.

SALEM-The Salem High School Class of 1951 will meet for breakfast at 9 a.m. Oct. 7 at The Center, 525 E. Second St.

Chicken dinner

EAST ROCHESTER-Chicken and biscuits, chicken and noodles, or a sampler of both will be served from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Oct. 11 at Bayard Grange on U.S. Route 30. The meal includes green beans, a choice of homemade cole slaw or applesauce, homemade dessert and beverage. A large serving is $7.50 and a small is $4.

Flu shots offered

SALINEVILLE-Flu shots will be given from 10 a.m. to noon Oct. 13 at the Salineville Volunteer Fire Department by Ohio Valley Home Health Services. Medicare and Unison is accepted, otherwise cost is $20. For information call 330-385-2333.

SALEM - Salem United Commercial Travelers will meet for dinner at 6:30 p.m. Oct. 14 at Perkins Restaurant and Bakery. The business session follows.

EP school board

EAST PALESTINE-The East Palestine City School District Board of Education's regular meeting begins at 6 p.m. Monday in the EPES Media Center.

Water exercise

SALEM-Salem Community Hospital's Water Exercise Together program will begin a new session on Oct. 19 at the Salem Community Center, 1098 N. Ellsworth Ave. Classes are two days a week, from 6 to 7 p.m., and conclude on Dec. 1. No classes will be held on Nov. 25 and 26. Cost is $50.

Water exercise is an excellent way to get into shape or to complement an existing exercise program. WET focuses on toning and shaping muscles, while minimizing stress on joints, and cardiovascular conditioning. The program is open to men and women of all ages. Community center membership is not required to participate. To pre-register before the first class call 330-332-7771. Checks should be made payable to Salem Community Hospital and mailed to the Rehabilitation Services Department, 1995 E. State St., Salem 44460, Attn: WET. For questions call 330-332-7771.

Texas Hold 'em

LEETONIA-Leetonia Little Bears are holding a Texas Hold'em/Dance on Nov. 7 at the American Legion. Registration starts at 3:30 p.m. Poker starts at 4 p.m. with a $25 pay in. A dance starts at 8 p.m. Cost is $10 per person/$15 per couple.

Veteran's Day

COLUMBIANA-Crestview Middle School Excel students will hold a Veteran's Day assembly at 8:35 a.m. Nov. 10 in the Crestview High School auditorium. The title of the assembly is "A Celebration of Our Nation's Symbols of Freedom." To make this day even more special, Excel students are inviting community veterans to visit Crestview Middle School for a brief interview about past experiences as a veteran. Interviews will be mostly about experiences and patriotic symbols that the veterans hold dear. Interested veterans can schedule an interview by calling Crestview Middle School at 330-482-4648 or email to skershner@crestviewlocal.k12.oh.us. Interviews will be held the week of Oct. 12-16. Following the assembly veterans and guests are welcome to stay to attend the reception held in the middle school cafeteria.

Safety Day

COLUMBIANA- The Columbiana Fire Department will host its 3rd annual Community Safety Day from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 10, in recognition of Fire Prevention Week. The event will be held at the Columbiana Fire Station located on South Vine Street and will include live demonstrations, equipment and vehicle exhibits, public awareness information and free food.

Additionally, in recognition of Public Power Week, the Columbiana Municipal Electric Department will again sponsor a free mercury thermometer exchange and will collect fluorescent light bulbs to recycle. Residents can bring mercury fever thermometers or mercury switches to the fire station and receive a free digital thermometer, while supplies last. If possible, the mercury thermometers should be brought in their original cases or two sealed plastic bags. If bringing mercury switches, have them sealed in two plastic bags. Unbroken compact fluorescent or tube bulbs will also be accepted for recycling with the cooperation of the Salem Home Depot.

LEETONIA- The Leetonia and Salem Historical Society will hold its monthly meeting at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 8, at the Leetonia Public Library. The guest speaker will be Lenore Sechler, president of the Hanover Township Historical Society, who will speak on the "Strange Stories of the Civil War." The public is welcome to attend.
