Salem First Night meeting set

SALEM-First Night Salem will hold an organizational meeting at 7 p.m. today at BB Rooners.

Salem Italian Fest contest winners

SALEM-The Salem Italian Festival featured several contests and competitions during its two days of festivities. Winners of the baking contest were Lois Shaw-Scharf with her award-winning pear cake as first-place winner, Joe Radin won second place with a pineapple cake, and Eloise Traina won third place honors with ricotta pie. The pizza eating contest, sponsored by Alfredo's Pizzeria, had two winners in the children's division, James Scott and Brittany Gushert. The children's spaghetti eating contest, sponsored by Ezio's Italian Restaurant, was won by Christian Corvin. The adult pizza eating contest and the adult spaghetti eating contest was won by the same young woman from Salem, Tiffany Faile. Chinese auction winners included, J & L Concessions, Laurie Jones, Diane Dull, Greg Walla, Laurie Cull, Becky and Tim Chamberlain, Dan Means, Sara Mastrangelo, and Ruth Roth. The 50/50 winners were Robin Schafer and Sue Nollier.

Family farm makes state century list

BERLIN CENTER-The Elwood Woolman family of Mahoning County was recently recognized by the Ohio Department of Agriculture for its achievement as an Ohio Century Farm-a recognition given to farmers held in the same family for 100 years or more. To commemorate this milestone, the family received a special certificate signed by Gov. Ted Strickland and Ohio Agriculture Director Robert J. Boggs to keep with their historic documents and pass down to future generations. Anyone who can verify that a farm and homestead has been in their family for at least 100 years may register as a century farm. Tour set for South Range school

NORTH LIMA-A tour to view the progress of the new K -12 South Range Schools building project will be conducted from 5 to 7 p.m. Sept. 1. The tour is open to the public which is asked to use the main entrance on Route 46 to access the construction site. People taking the tour will be asked to sign an "Agreement and Release from Liability" provided by Hammond Construction and South Range Local Schools.

Red-eye trip to New York City

SALINEVILLE -The Salineville Southern Alumni Scholarship Foundation is sponsoring a "Red-Eye" Trip to New York City. The bus will depart at 11:59 p.m. on Oct.. 23 from the Southern Local School and return at approximately 6 a.m. Oct. 25. The cost of the trip is $90 and your seat will be reserved at the time of payment. Reservations and payment are due by Sept. 18. Columbiana Rose Show planned

COLUMBIANA- The 49th annual Columbiana Rose Show will be held on Saturday, Sept. 12, during the Street Fair at the National City Bank on Main Street.

The show is open to all lovers and growers of roses. One need only bring their roses (with its name) to the bank between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. that day. Roses will be judged at 1:15 p.m. They will go on display to the public at 3 p.m. and sold at 8 p.m. Members of the club will also be available during the day to offer suggestions on rose growing.

EP Farmers Market open today

EAST PALESTINE-The East Palestine Farmers Market will be open from 3 to 8 p.m. today in the parking lot of the Centenary United Methodist Church, next to McDonald's.
