Washingtonville hires street department staffers

WASHINGTONVILLE- Village council made changes to the street department staff at its regular meeting Monday night.

Council accepted the resignation of Street Commissioner Nick Kleon effective Aug. 5. Kleon is moving out of state.

To fill the void, council hired village residents Edward Garrett and Norman Kegelmyer as part-time employees, not to exceed 12 hours per week. Mayor Norm Sommers said the two workers will be needed for mowing until snowfall begins.

In observation of Labor Day, the Sept. 7 council meeting has been canceled.

The next meeting is scheduled for 7 p.m. Sept. 21.

Disabled American Veterans

SALEM-Disabled American Veterans plan to meet at 7:30 p.m. today at Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 892.

Salem orientation

SALEM-Seventh-grade orientation begins at 10 a.m. today in the auditorium at the Salem Junior/Senior High School.

Orientation for students new to Salem High School also begins at 11 a.m. today in the auditorium.

Tourism Advisory Board

SALEM-Tourism Advisory Board of Salem will meet at 7 p.m. Monday at Salem City Hall.

Banquet in Salem

SALEM-The Banquet in Salem is scheduled from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday at the Memorial Building. Friends of the Banquet will serve meat loaf, mashed potatoes and gravy, green beans, fruit, vegetables and ice cream.

Pastor Lou Raymond, chairman of sponsor recruitment, emphasized the need for additional sponsors. "Friends of the Banquet means we have no regular slated sponsor and the Banquet must finance and provide volunteers for the meal. We need additional sponsors and financial gifts," he said. Interested sponsors are asked to contact him at 330-337-3125.

Parenting support group

LISBON-Lifeline of Columbiana County will host a parenting information/support group from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Monday at 889 N. Market St. Apt 5, Lisbon. This month's speaker is Julie Seifert of the Woman Infant Children Agency speaking on nutrition for the newborn and toddler. Childcare will be provided. There will be refreshments and a door prize. Salem 1946 breakfast

SALEM-The Salem High School Class of 1946 will meet for breakfast at 8:30 a.m. Aug. 25 at Adele's Place.

North Lima concert

NORTH LIMA- "Music the way we remember it" with Loren Coler, the Singing Senior Citizen, will be presented from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Aug. 26 at Woodworth Park on Luther Boulevard. Those attending are asked to bring lawn chairs.

Survivors of Suicide

LISBON-The Help Hotline Crisis Center support group of the Survivors of Suicide will meet at 6 p.m. Aug. 27 at the Columbiana County Counseling Center on Route 154. For information call 330-424-7767.

West Branch BOE

BELOIT- The West Branch Local Schools Board of Education will meet at 7:30 p.m. Aug. 27 in the high school Media Center. The meeting will include a public discussion concerning the rehiring of retired certificated staff. A work session will be held at 6 p.m.

Spaghetti and meatball dinner

SALEM- A spaghetti and meatball dinner will be served from 5 to 8 p.m. Aug. 29 at Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 892, 496 Arch St. Cost is $5 for adults and $3 for children 10 and under. Carryouts are available for $5.

Photo contest set

COLUMBIANA-Boy Scout Troop 16 of Columbiana is preparing for the annual Amateur Photo Contest to be held during the Columbiana Street Fair on Sept. 10, 11, and 12. There will be four categories for adults (age 14 and older):

Open category (any subject); Animals, People; and again this year "I Love This Town (Photos of Columbiana's beautiful history of buildings, churches, places and activities).

Prizes will be awarded to first, second, and third place winners in each category. First place receives a ribbon, plaque, and $25 gift card. Second place is a ribbon and $15 gift card. Third place gets a ribbon. The "People's Choice" winner, which is voted for by the fairgoers will receive a ribbon and $25 gift card.

For children (age 13 and younger), there will be an open category and prizes will we awarded to first place (a ribbon, plaque, and $25 gift card), second place (ribbon and $15 gift card) and third place (ribbon).

One other category open to all ages is computer enhanced photos, with first place receiving a ribbon and plaque. There is a $3 fee per entry. Entry forms may be requested at streetfairphotos@aol.com or the following area businesses: the library in Columbiana and Leetonia, Heck's Restaurant, Farmers Bank in Columbiana and Leetonia, National City Bank (both locations), and Sparkle Market.
