Mr. and Mrs. Edwin Exten of Leetonia celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary on Aug. 6. They were guests of honor at two parties commemorating the occasion.
The first party was held in February at the Dollbeer Community Center in Mesa, Ariz., at the couple's winter residence. It was hosted by neighborhood friends and traditionally marks the recognition of any couple celebrating a major wedding anniversary above the 50-year mark.
This year the party honored six couples with approximately 80 people in attendance. Former Salem resident Perry Hilliard spoke to the group about his long friendship with the Extens. A soloist then performed the "Twelfth of Never," one of the their favorite songs.
After all the couples had been individually honored, the festivities continued with a dance.
More recently, the couple was honored at a party on July 11 at Centennial Park in Salem. This event was hosted by the couple's three daughters and sons-in-law, Chuck and Connie Adams, Harry and Kathy Ewing and Jim and Debbie King.
Approximately 65 family and friends attended including seven of their 11 grandchildren and 11 of their 14 great-grandchildren.
Mr. Exten retired 18 years ago as a representative of the Cuna Mutual Insurance Company and has always been a loyal fan of the Leetonia Bears football team.
Mrs. Exten's favorite role was that of homemaker and mother, but enjoyed brief periods of work at the Cardinal Frame in Austintown, the former Fitness Club. She is an avid walker and artist.
