Mrs. Guy Metzgar guest

of Seven and One Club

SALEM-Mrs. Guy Metzgar was a guest when the Seven and One Club met May 27 at the home of Mrs. Jack Bruderly.

Following a luncheon, cards were played and prizes won by Mrs. Larry Dearth, first; Mrs. Gerald Mincks, second; Mrs. Fred Weingart, low; and Mrs. John Hively, travel.

Prior to the upcoming summer break, the group plans to meet at 7 p.m. June 17 at the home of Mrs. Weingart on South Range Road.

EP Class of 1954 to meet for lunch on June 10

EAST PALESTINE-The East Palestine High School Class of 1954 will meet for lunch at 11:30 a.m. June 10 at Das Dutch Haus in Columbiana.

Breakfast buffet to be served at Masonic Temple

SALEM-A public breakfast buffet will be open from 7:30 to 10 a.m. June 27 at the Salem Masonic Temple, 788 E. State St.

The menu offers pancakes, waffles, scrambled eggs, sausage, bacon, homemade sausage gravy, biscuits, homefries, toast, fruit cocktail, orange juice, coffee and tea.

Cost is $6 for adults, $3 for children under 10, and free for children under 2.

Carryouts are available. Proceeds are directed to the Salem Masonic Temple Building Fund.

The building offers a handicapped accessible elevator.

K of C to host steak fry and Night at the Races

LEETONIA-The Knights of Columbus #1569 will hold a steak fry and Night at the Races on June 20 at St. Patrick's Church Hall.

Cost is $10. The social hour begins at 5 p.m. followed by dinner from 6 to 8 p.m. Beer and wine will be available. For more information call 330-332-8141, 330-482-3555 or 330-427-9937.

Columbiana Senior

Citizens to meet June 9

COLUMBIANA-Columbiana Senior Citizens will meet at 10 a.m. June 9 at Grace Church. Those attending are to bring a sack lunch. The group met May 26 at the church with 19 members present.

The morning was spent playing games and cards. Clifford Aiken offered the noon blessing. Eunice Weikart presided at the meeting.

Bingo followed in the afternoon with Dwayne Hawkins winning the coverall. Cakes for the next meeting will be furnished by Charlie Hawkins and Dwayne Hawkins.

OES meeting dedicated

to past matrons, patrons

EAST PALESTINE-East Palestine Chapter #381 Order of the Eastern Star held its May meeting with 22 members and visitors in attendance. The theme of the evening was "American Pride/Covered Bridges." The meeting was dedicated to past matrons and past patrons.

Those in attendance were Ann Anderson, Mary Bingham, Roberta Drake, Kathy Jo Laughlin, Laura McMillin, Mary McMillin, Nancy McMillin, Mary Simmons, Edna Todd, Marilyn Whitfield, Bill Bingham, Guy Laughlin and Tom Whitfield.

Special guest for the evening were Grand Representative of Utah in Ohio, Mary McMillin; visiting Worthy Matron of Columbiana Chapter, Elaine Exten and Worthy Patron of Legacy Chapter, Bob Webster.

The members made a financial donation to chapter's scholarship fund. It was announced that a 50-year pin had been presented to Sister Ella Mae Whitmore.

The chapter voted to send the budget amount to Grand Chapter for District Charities.

This money will be split between ESTARL, Cancer, Heart and Youth. Order of the Eastern Star Home Trustee Bob Webster presented information on the Home in Mount Vernon.

The home is growing and there will be a ground breaking ceremony on June 28 for the new multi-purpose room.

Worthy Matron Laura McMillin honored members Mary and Bill Bingham, Edna and Gary Todd. Lunch was served by Wini Pethel, Edna and Gary Todd.

Region D traveling plaque

BOARDMAN-The Gold Wing Road Riders Association, Chapter M met May 23 at Yankee Kitchen in Boardman. Chapter Director Roy Jones conducted the meeting and announced that the April rigatoni dinner, which was in support of Relay for Life, raised $1,800.

A donation from members and guest was taken and the monies given to the Schleroderma Foundation in honor of member, Pat Daniels.

Plans were made to ride to Fremont to retrieve the Region D traveling plaque. Other upcoming rides and activities were announced.

The next meeting is June 27. All motorcyclists and their co-riders are welcomed to attend.

Flag program presented

by Marjorie Phillips

DAMASCUS-Marjorie Phillips presented a program, "Our Nation's Flag," when the Damascus Magazine Club met May 27 at the Methodist Church with 15 members hosted by Eleanor Kampfer.

The roll call was answered by each waving a flag which consisted mostly of our nation's flag and including a bi-centennial, state, civil war and the memorial service military flag given to Anna Cobbs earned by her late husband Virgil for his service in World War II. Associate member Janice Bennett was welcomed back.

As background, Phillips stated the flag stands for its land, its people, its government and ideals.

She read the very moving narrative, "I Am an American Flag" by Robert Schuler. It was written as if the flag was speaking with inserts by Donna Lautzenheiser, "Pledge of Allegiance;" Lee Keuntz reading the poem on the Statue of Liberty; and Dayle Gruszecki adding a verse of "America."

The group ended by singing, "I'm Just a Flag-Waving American." Memories of past memorial days were shared.

SHS Class of 1947

to meet June 18

SALEM-The Salem High School Class of 1947 will meet for breakfast at 9 a.m. June 18 at the Salem Hills Golf and Country Club, 12688 Salem-Warren Road.

For information call 330-337-3616. At a previous meeting, members signed a note to Ellen Thompson Wilkins of Zanesville, congratulating her for following Salem events by subscribing to the Salem News for 59 years.

R-Weigh reducing groups

record a loss of 51 pounds

SALEM-The R-Weigh weight reducing groups met Monday at Faith Chapel and recorded a loss of 5l pounds.

The good losers at the 1 p.m. meeting were Linda Brown, Randi Corse and Sandy McGarr. Dee Scott was the goalie of the week. McGarr reached her goal weight and Sue Carver reached her three-fourth way to goal weight and received monetary awards. Karen Morris won the can-do award and Judy Catlett received the vacation award. Eleven members received the "holiday dollar."

The baseball contest starts on June 8 with the Battin' Lashes playing the Diamond Dolls.

The good losers at the 5 p.m. meeting were Sarah Agee, Julie Borelli, Ruth Hill, Jessie Rea and Lois Wood. Vi Woodall was the goalie of the week. Louise Marchbanks reached her one-half way to goal status and Shirley Dias earned the vacation award.

Twenty-three members received the "holiday dollar." The Happy Hitters will play the Pink Powder Puffs in the baseball contest.

Village Varieties 4-H?

Club holds meeting

NORTH BENTON-The Village Varieties 4-H Club met on May 19 at the North Benton Presbyterian Church with 28 members present.

The next meeting begins at 7 p.m. June 9 at the church.

The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Steve Theil and the 4-H pledge by Jonathon James.

In old business, members discussed sending notes of encouragement to servicemen in Iraq. They also discussed the County Safety Poster Contest.

Under new business, members discussed the Health and Safety Contest at the county extension office on June 27.

Safety reports were given by Krista Burcaw on canoeing safety, Rebekah Owen about not chewing pens, Gabbi Sanor on medication and Brittney Zamarelli on four-wheeler safety. Health reports were presented by Hillary Nutter on horse colic and Sanor on cow diseases.

Demonstrations were given by James about meat chickens. Devotions were led by Julia Bock. Luke Jones and James gave a special presentation to members of Cloverbud 4-H about types of poultry.

Jared Jarvis provided food and Cole Chumney provided beverages.
