Blood drive set
SALEM- Salem Community Hospital and Salem Community Center are partnering to host a blood drive from 1 to 7 p.m. June 5 at the Salem Community Center, 1098 N. Ellsworth Ave. Donors who have not given blood since April 10 are eligible.
Individuals meeting certain criteria may elect to give two units of blood at one time during this drive, which has been designated as a "Double Red" site. During a double red cell donation, only red blood cells are collected, allowing the remaining blood components to be returned to the donor. While this process takes slightly longer to complete than a regular donation, a double red collection is especially helpful to patients in need-red cells are the most frequently used blood component and are needed for almost every type of transfusion.
Double red donors must wait 16 weeks (112 days) between donations in order for the red cells to replenish themselves. However, this process is more convenient for regular donors, because the double collection reduces the number of times they give throughout the year. To find out if you are eligible for a double red donation, or to schedule an appointment, call 330-332-7227.
