The Boulevard Boutique offers ‘neighborly feeling’

May 15, 2009
By KEVIN HOWELL, Staff Writer

GUILFORD LAKE- Even in this time of economic struggle, Guilford Lake resident Vickie Nelson is opening a boutique.

But not necessarily to make money.

"I hope people can get a neighborly feeling when they are here, get to know each other better," said Nelson, owner of the new Boulevard Boutique at 6885 Camp Boulevard.

Nelson is hosting a grand opening from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

Always interested in crafts, Nelson said the boutique features hand-made wood works such as cabinets and furniture crafted by her husband, Bill, as well as other items by herself and some friends including dish towels and jewelry.

"I'm offering things that have a use, not just pretty to look at, at an affordable price," Nelson said. "If you are looking for expensive things, don't come here."

The boutique's constantly changing inventory will also include the full line of Gooseberry Patch cookbooks, Goosecreek candles and picture frames, Nelson added, plus holiday specials, and eventually tea parties for little girls.

After many years in the banking industry in which she dealt closely with the public,

Nelson said she is yearning for that interaction again in all her extra time, citing the power outage last fall as a great experience for meeting others in the community.

"I've always enjoyed having people to talk to, to chat with," she said. "A lot of friends have complimented me on my decorating and have encouraged me to start the shop, so now just seemed like a good time to do it."

And success will be measured altruistically, according to Vickie and Bill.

"As long as the customers enjoy coming here and I enjoy it, then it is a success," she said.

"We're not trying to get rich, but just have fun at it," Bill added. "And if we can give someone a break or do something special, that's the idea."

Regular business hours will be 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday.

The business can be reached by calling 330-222-1047.
