schedules May 13 lunch

SALEM-The Salem High School Class of 1939 will meet for lunch at 11:30 a.m. May 13 at the Salem Hills Golf and Country Club.

Local magician earns

second places

SALEM-Local magician Jason Alan Greenamyer captured second place at a national contest in two categories Saturday evening. The National Battle of Magicians awarded Greenamyer the runner-up in close up magic and stage magic.

Breakfast planned for SHS Class of 1947

SALEM-The Salem High School Class of 1947 will meet for breakfast at 9 a.m. May 21 at the Salem Hills Golf and Country Club, 12688 Salem-Warren Road. For other information call Donna Chappell at 330-337-8887.

Public invited to spring bazaar at Slovak Club

SALEM-A spring bazaar will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. May 23 at the Salem Slovak Club, 313 S. Ellsworth Ave. Table space is available by calling 330-337-8426.

Square dance to be held at Knox Elementary

KNOX TOWNSHIP-A square dance titled "Round the Branch" will be held from 6 to 8:30 p.m. May 14 at Knox Elementary. All are welcome.

EPHS Class of 1954 lunch scheduled May 13

EAST PALESTINE-The East Palestine High School Class of 1954 will meet for lunch at 11:30 a.m. May 13 at Das Dutch Haus in Columbiana.

Senior Citizens Month to be observed in May

COLUMBIANA-Nineteen members attended the April 28 meeting of Columbiana Senior Citizens Club at Grace Church. Cards and games were played in the morning. Clifford Aiken gave the blessing prior to the lunch at noon. Bingo followed. In observance of May as Senior Citizens Month, the group plans to meet for breakfast on May 12 at Antone's. The regular meeting follows. Cakes for the May 26 meeting will be provided by Eileen Esterley and Kathleen Cox.

Safety reports given

at 4-H club meeting

NORTH BENTON-Safety reports relating to tornadoes were given by Jon James when the Village Varieties 4-H Club met April 21 at North Benton Presbyterian Church. Thirty-three members and 14 Cloverbuds attended. The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Maggie McDonald and the 4-H Pledge by Taylor Zamarelli. In old business, the club discussed trash pick-up and the pepperoni rolls sale. Under new business, members discussed supporting a service man in Iraq. Health reports were also presented by James about type two diabetes. Bottle feeding a goat kid demonstrations were given by Kathy Blackburn. Devotions were led by Billy Grammer. Maggie McDonald provided food and Jessie Slocum provided beverages.

announces reunion

DAMASCUS-Fifteen members of Damascus Magazine Club answered roll call by naming a First Lady when Treva Miller hosted the group at the Damascus United Methodist Church. Following reading of the minutes members remembered Faye Sekerak who continues with health issues. An update on the Damascus Bicentennial book was noted. Donna Lautzenheiser introduced member Dayle Gruszecki who presented her program on "Presidential Wives." She gave a background history on first ladies who were not always wives of the president. The title "First Lady" was first mentioned in1849 and became nationally accepted in 1877. These ladies do not have "jobs" but are involved in humanitarian activities of their choice.

Among "first" facts, members learned Hilary Clinton was the first to run for presidential election, to be a senator, and secretary of state following her role as First Lady. There are six former First Ladies presently living.

Gruszecki displayed the book "Prayer, Power and Petticoats" available at the First Ladies Library in Canton. She distributed crossword puzzles and informational sheets regarding First Ladies. Several commented on interesting facts such as Betty Bircher has a niece now serving as personal chef for Betty Ford in California.

Groves will perform

during Senior Day

ALLIANCE- Famed ventroloquist and comedian Ken Groves will perform at 6 p.m. May 12 on Senior Day at the Alliance Area Senior Center, 602 W. Vine St. Activities start with bingo at 3:30 p.m. with food available from 4 to 6:30 p.m.

The Senior Award Banquet and Dance is scheduled May 15. Dinner will be served at 5:30 p.m. followed by the dance at 7 p.m. Music will be provided by the Rex Taneri Orchestra. Admission is $11 per person, or $6 for the dance only. Dinner tickets must be purchased or reserved in advance. For information call 330-821-3348.

Salem Eagles Auxiliary to hold garage sale

SALEM-The Salem Eagles Auxiliary will be holding an indoor garage sale from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. May 30 in the back room at the Salem Eagles, 1884 N. Ellsworth Ave. Vendors are needed. Eight-foot tables are available for rent at $10 each. Lunch will be available starting at 11 a.m. For table rental call 330-429-8252 or 330-337-0664.

Tau observe anniversary

SALEM-Sisters of Epsilon Tau Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi gathered at Ricky's English Pub to celebrate the 78th anniversary of the founding of the sorority. Dorothy Bieshelt welcomed the group and Mary Stamp led the Founder's Day Pledge. Shirley Devan read the message from International. Madelyn Wilms announced the theme for the 2009-10 year, "Share Our Passport to Adventure."

Greenford Ruritan Club hold Father-Son Night

GREENFORD - Father-Son Night was featured when the Greenford Ruritan Club held its monthly meeting on April 27. President Bill Pitts presided. Dinner was served by the Greenford Lutheran Church volunteers. Ron Riebe thanked all the members who helped with the recent blood drive. Ron Clegg reported that some Ruritan sign maintenance was required around Green Township and that this work would be completed as soon as possible. Jim Hall introduced Bonnie Molnar, an English teacher at South Range High School and advisor for the Academic Challenge Team at South Range. She introduced team members Eric Razo, Luke Yeagley, Jarret Greene and Cassandra Simmons and they challenged a Ruritan member team headed up by Chris Kondas. Molnar noted that the team will be going to Chicago on May 29 to compete in a national tournament. Molnar also thanked the Greenford Ruritan Club for the $250 donation to help with expenses.

Butler Grange meeting

SALEM-Camille Wood presided when Butler Grange met May 2. Myrtle Bailey posed the question, What does a penny cost? She explained one cent doesn't even buy the metal that is contained in a penny and that it cost nearly 1.5 cents last year to create a penny. Bailey also offered "Why the census matters."

Ruth Ann Altenhof presented the program: May is Clean Air Month and stated, "We all know that oxygen is vital to sustaining life, therefore, breathing clean, oxygen-rich air is critical to our health." Camille Wood offered ways to reduce air pollutants. Bailey said "Protecting your health starts with you. Take an active approach by engaging in positive key behaviors, such as: remove and avoid asthma triggers." Altenhof said May 6 is Great American Grump Out."

April card winners were: first place, Harold Mountz and Carol Waggoner. Jay Lafferre and Betty Coy took second place. Alta Martin won the door prize. The next euchre party begins at 7:30 p.m. May 15 at the grange. Mile Branch Grange presented the traveling program to Willow Grove Grange on May 5 and Willow Grove goes to Bayard Grange on May 12.

Senior Citizens invited to prom at Salem High

SALEM-The annual Senior Citizen Prom, sponsored by the Salem High School Interact and Salem Rotary clubs, will be held May 23 in the Salem High School cafeteria. This year's theme is "Tahitian Nights: A Luau." Doors will open at 6 p.m., dinner begins at 6:30 p.m. This event is a gift to senior citizens, however, complimentary tickets are needed. Tickets may be picked up from 3 to 4:30 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday in the high school cafeteria. For questions, contact Mellay Gardner at 330-332-0524.
