- COLUMBIANA-The 123rd Hawkins reunion will be held at 1 p.m. today at the Duck Pond at pavilion four in Firestone Park. Those attending are to bring a cover dish and place setting.
All families with Hawkins connections are welcome to join the celebration.
A family photograph will be taken at 2 p.m. The genealogy session of the reunion was held from 1 to 6 p.m. Saturday at the Womens Club. Limited copies of "The Hawkins Family" by Linda McElroy are available. Each hard-bound copy is $40, plus shipping if desired.
- SALEM-The 25th annual Lozier-Steele reunion was held Sept. 7 at the Hrovatic Lake and cabin. Twenty-four relatives attended from Alliance, Atwater, Cortland, Leetonia, Lisbon, Kent and Salem. The next reunion will be held Sept. 13, 2009. For information contact Patricia A. Steele Landsberger at 500 E. Fourth St., Salem.
- LEETONIA-Leetonia Ruritan Club celebrated its 50-year anniversary with a corn roast at the home of Richard and Annabelle Sitler on Aug. 12. members, and their guests, were present to hear Richard Sitler tell the history of the club. The original charter was displayed.
Special guests were honorary members Howard Wilhelm and Wallace Rettig with their wives. Other special guests included Ray Lautzenheiser, Ohio District Governor, who presented a certificate to the club; Robert Lahmers, Ohio Lieutenant Governor ; Frank Kinsey, National; and Rebecca Ryan, past Leetonia Ruriteen president. Howard Wilhelm donated a handmade clock to be auctioned at the fall convention. Karen Bulford received an Outstanding Secretary award.
4 SALEM-Bank One retirees and former employees will meet for lunch at noon Sept. 16 at Pondi's Restaurant in Lisbon.

SALEM-The Goshen High School Class of 1941 will meet for breakfast at 9 a.m. Sept. 16 at a different site this month, Timberlanes.
4 SALEM- Salem Senior Citizens will meet at 12:30 p.m. Sept. 24 at the Memorial Building. A program will be presented by James Laloo of Austintown.
4 SALEM-Salem Church Women United will meet at 1:30 p.m. Sept. 22 at the Emmanuel Lutheran Church Education Building. Fellowship begins at 1 p.m. Hostesses are members of the First Methodist and First Christian churches.
The program will be presented by Pat Flamino, director of clinical services at the Salem Visiting Nurse Association. Women of all faiths are welcome.
4 COLUMBIANA-Columbiana Senior Citizens met on Aug. 26 at the Grace Church with 25 in attendance. Charleen Riggs was a guest. Cards and games were played in the morning. Clifford Aiken offered the blessing prior to the noon meal. A moment of silence was observed in memory of Marie Chandler and Marie Hawkins. The afternoon was spent playing bingo. Eileen Esterly won the coverall.
4 SEBRING-Sebring American Legion Post 76 Auxiliary members met recently and made final plans for a Swiss steak dinner to be held from 4:30 to 7 p.m. Sept. 18. The menu includes dressing, mashed potatoes, gravy, vegetable, salad and roll. Cost is $7. Proceeds will go toward veterans' needs and community care. Carryouts are available.
Member and Gold Star mother, Carey Meissner , told members that a dedication will be held on Oct. 10 at Cherry Point, N. C. base where her son Danny Vickers was stationed, working as a bulk fueler before he was deployed to Iraq.
There will be a commemorative naming of "Fuel Pump House Building #4803" after Vickers, who was killed serving in Iraq in 2002.
Donations were made to the following: B.L. Miller School for school supplies, Sebring Fire Department for fire prevention week, American Legion for kitchen supplies, Sebring Harvest Home Festival, Brecksville Veterans Hospital for birthday parties and to the Sebring Lions for troop boxes.
A memorial donation was made for Ina Grimm, a 33-year member of the auxiliary, who passed away in August.
Members were asked to work at the breakfast at the Legion on Oct. 5.
The proceeds from this breakfast will benefit the Sebring Harvest Home Festival on Oct. 3, 4 and 5. The all-you-can-eat breakfast is from 8 a.m to noon. Cost is $6.
Various thank you letters were read, received from the "Eagle Medics" hospital personnel working at the trauma hospital in Baghdad. Three boxes were sent last week with eight more ready to go. "All items are well received and directly support and impacts the quality of life of our wounded warriors and hospital staff members. Thank you, Sebring, Ohio," one soldier wrote. All this is done with donations.
Membership chairman, Judy Hubbs, announced that she is collecting dues now and that it will remain $18 for the year.
The next meeting begins at 7 p.m. Oct. 8 in Baumgartner Hall.
4 SALEM- The "Wave Our Colors" quilting class begins at 6:30 p.m. Sept. 16 at the First United Methodist Church, 244 S. Broadway Ave. A wall quilt will be made with one charm pack or 5x5 squares. For more information call the church at 330-337-9531.
4 SALEM-The Linnea Nelson Circle of the First Baptist Church met Sept. 9 at the home of Elaine Davis. She shared a reading titled "Have you noticed? They don't make mirrors like they used to."
The Trumbull Baptist rally was held Sept. 13 at the Western Reserve Baptist Church.
A get-well card was signed and sent to Elaine Greenamyer.
The Baptist Womens Day of Prayer will be observed Nov. 3 at the Alliance First Baptist Church.
Shirley Gray showed a cinnamon stick favor to be made in November. She presented the program, "Come to the edge," citing examples of faith leading to trust.
Leora Brink and Davis participated in a mini skit as an example.
Jean Kupka led devotions using "Be still my heart" and "The question" in conclusion. The next meeting features a trip to the Pine Tree Barn in Shreve.
- COLUMBIANA- A book review of "Animal, Vegetable and Miracle" was given by Barbara Morey when the Columbiana Garden Club met on Aug. 19 at the home of Shirley Fitzpatrick. Hostesses were Nancy Souder, Shirley Bell and Fitzpatrick The next meeting will be held on Sept. 16 at British Pastries in Leetonia. Loey Zellers, Jerry King and Ruth Cottom will serve as hostesses. - EAST PALESTINE-The 99th Western PA Cory family reunion was held at the East Palestine City Park on Aug. 10. President Tom Vickroy called the meeting to order by ringing the Cory bell.
New members, Mr. and Mrs. Lester Pratt and family of Cleveland were welcomed. Others attended from Columbus, West Chester, Akron, Ravenna, Kent, Sagamore Hills, Lisbon, East Palestine; and Cannelton, Darlington, Coraopolis, Prospect, and Stoneboro, Pa.
Plans were made for the 100th anniversary Western PA Cory reunion to be held on Aug. 1, 2009.
The National Cory Family Society has been invited. Rooms have been reserved at the Holiday Inn on Route 18 in Beaver Falls, Pa. on Friday and Saturday for out-of-town guests.
There will be a tour of the Little Beaver Historical Society Greersburg Academy and buildings in Darlington, Pa., on Saturday followed by a catered dinner at the East Palestine Park Community Center.
A special ceremony will be held when the heirs of the 400-year-old "Greate Book" present the book to the Little Beaver Historical Society.
This is a book written by Rev. Richard Rogers in England about 1604 called "The Seven Treatises"and brought to this country in 1639 by John Cory I of Southold, L.I. His descendant, Elnathan Cory, brought the book with him when he came to the Darlington area in 1797. It has been passed down 12 generations to the present owners. This rare book is well known in Ecclesiastical Circles.
Officers elected for the next reunion are Tom Vickroy, president; Carolyn Vickroy, vice president; and Diana Maye, secretary/treasurer. Newsletter editors, Marge Chilson and Sally Lumley, will send out more information on the reunion details in December or January. Gary Lisica has offered to look into setting up a website for the Cory reunion association.
- LISBON-The 27th annual Sixteen School Reunion will be held at 1 p.m. Sept. 21 at the Boy Scout Pavilion on Furnace Road. Those attending are to bring a coverdish and their own table service as well as a gift for the auction.
Beverage and rolls will be provided. Anyone who ever attended any Wayne Township school is invited to attend.
- SALEM-Camille Wood presided when Butler Grange met recently. Ruth Ann Altenhof presented the program "September Occurrences:" Sept. 1, Labor Day; Sept. 9, Wonderful Weirdos' Day, Sept. 17, Constitution Day; Sept. 22 Family Day; and Sept. 21-27, Child Passenger Safety Week.
The annual Demeter dinner begins at 6:30 p.m. Sept. 15 at Butler Grange. The officers and committee meeting will be held after dinner at 7:30 p.m.
The August card winners were Harold Mountz and Alice Bryan, first; and Glenn Dunn and Martha Reight, second. Russell Reight won the door prize.
The next euchre party begins at 7:30 p.m. Sept. 19 at the grange, located west of State Route 9, on the corner of Winona and Butler Grange roads.

SALEM-The YWCA of Salem is beginning a new program for families in Columbiana County called Kin & Kids. This new service is especially for families where children under the age of 18 are being raised and cared for daily by relatives other than their parents.
To introduce Kin & Kids to the community, the YWCA is inviting kinship families to a picnic from noon to 3 p.m. today at Firestone Park in Columbiana, at pavilion one-east, located on Lakeside Drive off of Park Avenue. This kickoff event is free, will be held rain or shine (the facility is enclosed) and will include a picnic-style lunch, beverages and supervised activities for the children.
Dora Sterling, who has spent the last 30 years as an advocate for families and children in Ohio having worked at Ohio Department of Job and Family Services, Ohio Department of Youth Services, Ohio Family and Children First Council, and recently retired from the Ohio Department of Mental Health, knows first hand the challenges and rewards grandparents and relatives face who are raising relative children. She and her husband have been raising two grandchildren for the last 10 years. She will speak to the adults about life raising relatives' children and address questions and concerns brought forward from those attending the event.
It is requested that families register, giving the ages and number of children attending, by calling the YWCA office from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
The program is funded through the Pearce Foundation, Ohio Attorney General's Office, and United Way Services of Northern Columbiana County. The Rotary Club of Salem has provided the funds for the picnic.

SALEM-The Saxon Retirees enjoyed their recent Sept. 3 session with 61 present. This included members Louise Theiss accompanied by her daughter Jean Chamberlain of Poland as a guest, member Fred Theiss Jr. and wife Beth from Crestline, Mitzi Theiss Ward and husband Ray of Florida and North Carolina. Barbara Bryan was a guest of her mother Walli Spack as Norma Byers brought prospective new member Barbara Gorman as her guest. Nikodemus Henriss of Austria also was welcomed again along with brother Siegried and Hermina Henriss. These new members were guests of their sister Hattie Drotleff. Thanks was extended to committee members and extra helpers, Ina Dutcher, Clem Vogt and Nancy Stumperth. Bill Hiltbrand offered the invocation. The following officers gave their reports: Bob Kekel, vice president and chairman; Katherine Lederle, treasurer; and Sue Fritzman, secretary.
Retirees thanked Fred Theiss Jr. for donations from the Theiss-Krauss family. A portion of the donation will also be used as a memorial for the tree project.
Hiltbrand announced members on the sick list and Nancy Stumperth acknowledged members celebrating birthdays and anniversaries in October.
Hiltbrand also presented humorous readings along with Harry Simpson and George Spack.
A moment of silence was observed for Hilda (Lutsch) Simpson, 92, who passed away Aug. 20.
