NOT denim. It's a tri-blend. Really. Other than for youth before they join the church. No buttons (yes, pins) no mustaches.

No, I don't think they should be required at all. Doesn't mean I don't think you're an idiot for not having them. ESPECIALLY when you try to say that God wouldn't want you to have one. Good thing they didn't just arbitrarily decide that God would have been against denim, what would they wear?!

I hear you on that one, Grant. I think it's like the few who won't use reflectors on their buggies--not real bright, but still all part of "God determines the length of our days".

I still don't get how Amish in one area can have different rules than in another, based on how a bishop feels. Some allow riding bikes, some don't. Some allow rubber wheels, some don't Enclosed buggies, or not enclosed buggies. Some can even have cell phones, most can't. That kind of subjective (dependent on a bishop) faith is not for me.

But I guess if we allow them not to go to school beyond 8th grade, we can allow them no smoke detectors as well.

A question for you, Grant. Do you think smoke alarms should be required in homes? What about helmets on motorcyclists? I personally wouldn't care if there were laws for that, but I would think that you being more of a libertarian, you wouldn't.

Cite the quote from God himself that says "Thou shalt not use smoke detectors!"

One of, if not The, key tenets of their religion involves "resignation, yieldedness, submission to God's will, 'let it be-ness', acceptance, humility, self-surrender, giving themselves up/over to God.

In a spirit of humility they trust in God's providence. Or, "We would rather through the grace of God suffer our temporal bodies to be burned, drowned..., than to show any obedience contrary to the word of God"

We may not agree, but they obviously hold to it--enough to up and move for it.

So if their charred remains remain, they feel they are with God, by His choice.

When he reached heaven and asked, “God, why did you not save me? I believed in you with all my heart. Why did you let me drown?” God replied, “I sent you a pick-up truck, a boat and a helicopter and you refused all of them. What else could I possibly do for you?”

The man continued to pray, believing with all his heart that he would be saved by God. The flood waters continued to rise. A helicopter flew by and a voice came over a loudspeaker offering to lower a ladder and take him off the roof. The man waved the helicopter away, shouting back that he was waiting for God to save him. The helicopter left. The flooding water came over the roof and caught him up and swept him away. He drowned.

The man continued to pray and hold on to his vision. As the water began rising in his house, he had to climb up to the roof. A boat came by with some people heading for safe ground. They yelled at the man to grab a rope they were ready to throw and take him to safety. He told them that he was waiting for God to save him. They shook their heads and moved on.

A man was trapped in his house during a flood. He began praying to God to rescue him. He had a vision in his head of God’s hand reaching down from heaven and lifting him to safety. The water started to rise in his house. His neighbour urged him to leave and offered him a ride to safety. The man yelled back, “I am waiting for God to save me.” The neighbour drove off in his pick-up truck.

Dang Grant, that's pretty harsh. I'm no expert on the Amish, but if their main thing is a nice, simple, old fashioned life, with no modern hustle bustle, bills, rules, laws, burocracies, and the day to day BS that we all have to deal with, well then God bless them for it. So what if they don't use smoke detectors. A good portion of the population doens't maintain theirs anyways, so they might as well not have them.
