"Like Iran and Saudi Arabia, oil-rich Venezuela has stitched affordable gas into its national fabric. “Oil is seen as a national resource, effectively owned by all and to which all are entitled,” says Halff. “The idea of cheap gasoline tends to be firmly entrenched in the political culture of those countries.” Venezuela is lowest .08 per gal. but it is subsidized Chavez. I don['t think I would like life in any of those countries though.

Truth our prices in the US are still much less than Canada or Europe. What I don't understand is how it can jump 30 cents in one day or if you travel it can vary greatly between states.

Haven't you heard. We're energy independent. All pipelines weather gas or oil leads to the gulf. There to be shipped overseas. So much for the cheap energy the drill here drill now crowd promised. We (The energy companies} are selling our energy future to the highest bidder. They have enough idiots out there (insert tea party here) convinced that this is all good for America. Yet we pay over $3.00 for a gallon of gas while in other leading oil producing countries they are paying a fraction of that.

Don't you think the selling out of America would be keeping us dependent on Middle East oil?

It may be creating jobs, but most of them are for relocated citizens from Chesapeake's home base (Oklahoma/Texas). Sure, they have to be put up in hotels long term and have to buy things which help the economy, but the job outlook in this area is just as grim because these companies lied about local jobs, by and large.
