Buckle your seat belts for the Texas Eastern pipeline & compressor expansion. Texas Eastern is the pipeline division of Spectra Energy.

Despite platitudes about safety, Spectra Energy/Texas Eastern has a documented record of violations, explosions and fines -- including a $15 million federal fine (for spilling toxic PCBs along its pipeline).

In neighboring Pennsylvania, Spectra Energy operates an underground natural gas storage reservoir called Steckman Ridge: 12-billion cubic feet of nat gas storage, 5,000 horsepower compressor station, and pipelines. It has had ongoing problems since it went online in 2009.

In March, residents were so concerned about loud popping noises (lasting 2-3 hours) and what looked like smoke coming from the compressor station, they called 911. For more information, look up "Spectra Energy Flip-Flops."
