Just reading this article is depressing and unacceptable. If our Government spent half the effort and time solving the problems that have forced this all to exist oh how better off we would ALL BE.

I am sorry but there is nothing to celebrate. Our Government has grown so big that we are in a no way out crisis. If people started working and capable of going back to self independence, THESE people would be out jobs and standing in unemployment lines.

Look at that list...it is frightening. We are never going to recover from this not on this path.

Isn't frightening to think, one day when we are all dependent upon Government, working for Government, our third world nation will be born! God help us!

Yep and that vicious circle just keeps going round and round and getting bigger and bigger. We are on a doomsday path in America.

I'm kind of curious where would these people find all these jobs your talking about ?

It's kind of hard to be independent when most of the jobs in the Salem area pay poverty level wages .

The list of agencies in the article you see are the ones that said they would be there. What we dont have is the list of those agencies that were invited but declined. Knowing the thoroughness of the director of CDJFS, I am certain the Col Cty VA was invited but turned declined.

The majority of people on welfare do have jobs. In fact to even qualify for cash assistance in most cases you have to be employed at least 30 hours a week.

notsocialist, disagree with stuff if you want, but quit spewing out lies that hype up the hatred toward people on welfare! you act like none of them work, when in FACT, MOST of them do! Now, shall we talk about why wages in this country are so stinking low that that is even possible?!

Sunshine says "The majority of people on welfare do have jobs. In fact to even qualify for cash assistance in most cases you have to be employed at least 30 hours a week." You are incorrect. People collecting cash assistance are not employed. Those that work the 30 hrs you speak of are ones working off their cash assistance. That is called the Work Experience Program (WEP). They are "working off the money they receive. In other words, this is not unsubsidized employment. It is merely a work requirement.

And those on SSI etc.. find out how old those people who say they aren't returning to work are. Since around 70% of these recipients are over 65.. do we really expect them to be planning to go back to work?

Personally there's always 2 sides to every story. I know families whose parents where on welfare and their kids are now on it.

I know people who are receiving food stamps, because there to lazy to work and would rather spend the day doing drugs,

For the people who really need the help.No problem

I definitely know those who abuse it also. And it's wrong and needs changed. I just have a problem with people like notsocialist who generalize the people who are on it. Unjustly at that, as the statistics show. Say you think it needs fixed, say you think we need to figure out a better way. Just don't make generalized statements based on your limited knowledge and experience (notsocialist I mean)Know what I'm sayin?
