Bill to double gun crime penalties makes good sense

Guns really don’t kill people. People do — and perhaps government should be paying more attention to the murderous thugs who threaten our safety....

I agree with the intent of this bill, but they really need to consider much stiffer sentences all the way around and from the very beginning. I'm not stating this because I feel there needs to be a higher degree of retribution against criminals, but because when criminals are incarcerated they are not committing crimes in society or expanding the segment of society that has become very expensive to maintain. If an 18 to 20-something year old offender is incarcerated for 20 to 30 years then he will be in his 40s or 50s when he gets out. During that time, no additional crimes in society were committed by that offender that not only affected the victims, but drained the resources of the criminal justice system. More importantly, while the offender is incarcerated, he is not siring a multitude of children that will grow up in a less than desirable environment and likely become criminals themselves to continue the cycle.

Initially, the cost will be huge, but its an investment. We must think in long term results rather than two, four, and six year terms. What will society pay out over the next 50 years if we don't do something?
