Actually, Salemfan, you're wrong. "Candidate" is the noun, "Democratic" would be the adjective. Even in your own example, you incorrectly label "Democrat" as a noun, which it isn't if the word "candidate" is following it. Not that it makes a lot of difference, but grammatically the article was incorrect, as was your explanation.

Actually, what is written IS grammatically correct. Mr. Apple is a candidate (noun) of the Democratic Party. Look up the definition in any accepted mainstream dictionary and you'll see the definition of "Democrat" and you're likely to see it says it is a noun, describing a member of the Democratic Party. For example, you would not say "Mr. Apple, a Democratic, is a candidate for President of City Council..." You would say "Mr. Apple, a Democrat, is a candidate for President of City Council..." In this case, I believe Ms. Greier used the correct grammar to describe Mr. Apple as the Democrat (noun) candidate.
