PGA Championship - Day 1 - Wild Thing

August 9, 2012 - B.J. Lisko
John Daly! Yes, that John Daly is two shots back after the opening round of the PGA Championship. You've gotta feel good about the ex-Wild Thing in contention at a major, and certainly I will take complete credit for his revival should he win. Kidding aside, it was great to see, and hopefully he can hang on long enough in this tournament to be a factor come Sunday. Meanwhile, Tiger is about where you would expect to see him given his recent rounds of golf. That the course seems to be a little more forgiving than analysts originally told us it was bodes well for Woods over four rounds. With the exception of a few holes, there's not really any big stretch of real estate to get golfers in a whole lot of trouble to the point where they shoot themselves out of the tournament. Seeing Tiger's ball-striking first hand in Akron, I have no doubt he'll hang around the lead through the weekend. Phil Mickelson seems lost. After winning earlier this year at Pebble, it seems like something's up with Lefty. He's looked stressed hitting pretty much every shot since April, and I've got to wonder if being elected into the World Golf Hall of Fame so early in his career is messing with his head. First rounds of majors are always exciting because so many guys are still in contention after 18 holes. Hopefully this major is one for the books. I'd personally love to see the new guy major streak come to a close this week with say a Daly or Woods taking the crown. Also, don't close your eyes on Ben Curtis who is at 3-under after the first day. See you back here on the weekend. Hopefully Tiger, Ben and J.D. are all still here, too.
